Nude Me/Under the Skin:
The Embalming of Black Women's Visibility, 2020
Commissioned by Black Shade Projects in partnership with 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, Marrakech, this durational performance was set in the surrounds of art space Dar Bellarj.
The piece was developed in conversation with the exhibition, The Archaeology of Intimacy: Memory and imagination of the photographic album. Complimenting works by artists like Hassan Hajjaj, it was also made in collaboration with 11 local women from the Marrakech Médina.
The resulting artwork, The Cocoon, was woven over 8 hours and presented a safe space for the now awakened black woman to exist. Tokens of care provide sustenance within the cocoon, alongside traditional Derbouka music all offered by the local collaborators.
